Past as Prologue

Dear Educator,

prologue of a book

You are a time-traveler, constantly bridging past, present, and future. No matter how much you imagine or plan, you cannot know your future. And like your future, your present is intangible. It can neither teach nor instruct you until it can be grasped and analyzed as part of your past. Your past is the only part of your existence with real form, and the only part which can be revisited. The past is therefore a powerful force in your life.

The past speaks to us in a thousand voices, warning and comforting, animating and stirring to action.

Felix Adler

That’s not to say you are bound by your past. Today is a new beginning and your choices can shape a future inconceivable to your past self. But your past is the only explanation for where you are right now. You are, for better or for worse, the product of what you have done and what has been done to you.

Therein lies the beauty of your past. You carry with you, every day, a unique combination of experiences. Your choices (and the choices of others which shaped you) have given you insights and opportunities wholly unknown to others. This allows you to see joy in things others cannot and anticipate harm in things others find harmless. Your past, therefore, contains wisdom, and wisdom begs to be shared.

Make it a great day, dear educator, and share the benefit of your experience.
